The defender has already passed his medical and will arrive on a free transfer this upcoming summer. The club felt the player’s versatility - as he can feature at center back, left back, and center defensive midfield - coupled with his experience and overall quality was too good an opportunity to pass on in a COVID impacted market.
Alaba will be 29-years-old when he arrives at the club and with an €11 million annual salary, only be behind the likes of Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale, Sergio Ramos, and Toni Kroos in his total compensation. Given how highly Real Madrid have valued the Austrian, it’s likely that he comes in and slots straight into the starting XI, potentially at the expense of Ferland Mendy. His arrival could have a domino affect — will Militao and Nacho opt to stay at the club? If Alaba slots in at left back, will Reguilon’s buy-back clause ever be triggered?
The first new arrival of the 2021/2022 season looks set to be David Alaba. Given the financial implications of COVID19, it will be interesting to see if any other reinforcements are brought in to strengthen the squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.
