Former Real Madrid forward Antonio Cassano was interviewed on Bobo TV (via Record) where he revealed the peculiar way he gained weight while at the club.

“At Real Madrid I barely got around and I managed to lose about 12 kilos. Then came [Fabio] Cannavaro and I gained them again. Nutella was one of the sponsors of the club and every month they gave us five kilos of product.”

“In seven months I gained 14 kilos. I ate Nutella straight out of the bottle and I didn’t care. It was shameful.”

This is both a humorous and interesting insight into a portion of a former Real player’s career at the club. He had a pretty good deal going if the players were getting this much supply of Nutella during the mid-2000s.

The club actually started fining him for excess weight just several months after joining. He had a reputation of attitude problems as well including a suspension with Real Madrid for complaining about his play time. He also had a locker room argument with his manager at Inter several years later.

Cassano joined Real after a lengthy spell with Roma. He was only the second Italian player to sign for Real Madrid. He featured 19 times in La Liga, scoring two goals and three assists. Though he spent only a brief period with the club, two seasons, this will certainly be a memorable story.
