It wasn’t meant to be for Real Madrid as the club walked away with a single point. The weather left fans wondering if the match would be played as others were cancelled but the snow held off for the most part.
However, it wasn’t just the pitch conditions that made it difficult for Zidane’s men. Osasuna were tough to break down, covered the box well and forced Real Madrid to play out wide.
See player ratings below.
Thibaut Courtois —7: Tested in the first half with a few attempts from Osasuna but nothing too noteworthy. Earns another clean sheet.
Lucas Vazquez —7: In for the suspended Carvajal. Acted as a winger and a right-back tonight which left him extra tired. Difficulties tracking Osasuna players because he was often higher up the pitch leaving Varane to cover. Put in good crosses but nothing connected. Finished with one dribble, two key passes and six tackles.
Sergio Ramos —6.75: Standard performance from the Captain but he couldn’t will his team to take home all three points. Caught sleeping in the second and was lucky that Osasuna squandered chances. Appeared up top a lot which left Madrid open to a counter and Varane alone. Put the ball in the back of the net but was offside. Finished with one dribble and one tackle.
Raphael Varane —7: Very important in the first half when the hosts pressed. Some crucial 1-v-1 moments and tracked players well. Helped cover Vazquez’s space when he was missing. Good interceptions in the dying minutes. Finished with two aerials won and one tackle.
Ferland Mendy —7: Another active night for Mendy. Connected well with Hazard down the left and used his speed to get into the box and cross the ball in. Some passes went wasted, though, and he misplaced others. Finished with two shots, one dribble, two key passes and two tackles.
Casemiro —7.5: Very influential performance in the first. Strong interceptions and wasn’t afraid to attack when needed. Very good defensively as well. Finished with two shots, two key passes, a staggering seven aerials won and one tackle.
Toni Kroos —6.75: Very quiet in the first half, often dropping alongside Varane and Ramos which left Madrid with one less creative mind to try and break through Osasuna. More active in the second. Finished with one aerial won and two tackles.
Luka Modric —7.5: Another good performance. Was always alert to try and find gaps to open up Osasuna but struggled to connect with teammates. Some great individual moments of skill. Finished with three shots and one aerial won. Subbed after 75 mins.
Marco Asensio —7.5: Started strong but faded out after a while. Worked hard to regain possession and attack Osasuna in the first. Some great ball control and had a shot stopped by Pirón which would have been quite the goal. Finished with one shot, three dribbles, one key pass and one aerial won. Subbed after 66 mins.
Karim Benzema —6: Extremely quiet tonight. Put the ball in the back of the net in the second half but was offside. Often left alone in the box which made it difficult to get involved but needed more from him tonight. Finished with one shot, one key pass and two dribbles.
Eden Hazard —7.5: Was one of the better players tonight and nice to see him active again. A bit too much showboating, though. Heatmap was all over the pitch. Couldn’t connect with Benzema but did with Mendy to help attack Osasuna. Finished with three dribbles, one aerial won and one tackle. Subbed after 75 mins.
Substitutes:
Fede Valverde —5: On for Asensio in the 65th minute. Decent in the air but looks a fraction of himself. Not influential at all tonight.
Isco —5: Replaced Modric in the 75th minute but couldn’t create anything to crack a tight-knit Osasuna. Finished with four dribbles.
Mariano —5: Tried to instantly make an impact with a darting run and a shot just seconds after coming on in the 75th minute (offside). However, he only had three touches and completed zero passes during his time on the pitch.
