Real Madrid are interested in the signing of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba as a free agent, according to a report published today on AS. Pogba’s current contract with United expires next summer and Los Blancos want to take advantage of the situation in order to sign a midfielder they’ve chased for a long time.
Most fans and reporters thought that Madrid’s interest in Pogba had decreased after Zinedine Zidane’s departure from the Spanish capital, but it is not the case, per that same report. In fact, Real Madrid believe that Pogba and Kylian Mbappe would like to play together in Madrid given their excellent relationship with Karim Benzema.
Real Madrid will get Gareth Bale, Isco and Marcelo’s contracts off the books next summer, so signing Pogba as a free agent would not be a problem for the club from a financial standpoint.
However, he would be an intriguing fit with midfielders like Casemiro, Kroos, Camavinga and Valverde all wanting and deserving relevant minutes. Furthermore, Modric could and should be expected to sign another single-year extension, so Los Blancos would have a very deep midfield line where it wouldn’t be easy to find minutes for everyone.
If Pogba keeps rejecting Manchester United’s offers to extend his contract, he would be allow to negotiate with other teams on January 1st, 2022. If Madrid are truly interested in his signing, this will be the perfect chance for them.
