Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, who has long been involved in a sex-tape case, will appear in French court on Wednesday on trial. Six years ago Benzema was accused of ‘complicity’ in an attempt to blackmail former French teammate Mathieu Valbuena over the use of a sex-tape.
According to reports in France, as of Monday, it was still unclear whether or not Benzema would attend the trial. The Frenchman is currently in Ukraine to play in Real Madrid’s game against Shakhtar Donetsk tomorrow. The assumption is that he will then fly to France while the rest of his Real Madrid teammates return to Madrid; though according to AFP, Benzema’s lawyers did not respond to their request to see if the French striker would attend.
It is confirmed that Valbuena will be in attendance, based on his lawyer’s words.
This is a case that has taken a while to get to this stage, and stems back all the way back to 2015. Per France 24, “The maximum sentence for complicity in attempted blackmail is five years in prison and a fine of 70,000 euros ($81,000).”
There will be more answers in the coming days.
