Shortly after reports surfaced that Raphael Varane was seriously considering departing Real Madrid this summer, a new plot twist has come forward.

Real Madrid and Varane are reportedly in talks over a contract extension, according to a report from MARCA’s Jose Felix Diaz. Varane’s current deal expires in Summer 2022. The report says talks are going well and an extension should happen soon.

Should this report hold true, it’s huge news for Real to hold on to a top defender who still has a long career ahead of him. It’s hard to imagine still that Varane is only 27 and has accomplished so much in his 10 years with Real Madrid so far.

Signing Varane to an extension is just one important piece of work the club has ahead of itself this summer. It’s crucial that Real gets Varane locked down long term well ahead of his current contract’s expiration date.
