Real Madrid missed a golden opportunity to be three points behind Atletico de Madrid in the table entering next Sunday’s Derby, which would’ve given Los Blancos a chance to lead La Liga with a win against their neighbors. Madrid drew 1-1 on Real Sociedad’s visit to the Di Stefano and Thibaut Courtois talked to the press after the game.
“We played well on the first half, I think we created chances we just couldn’t convert. Then, on the second half we didn’t start right, they scored a great goal and the game changed after that. Then we scored but we lacked that second goal,” said Courtois.
The goalkeeper explained what happened when coach Zidane changed to a 3-5-2 formation right before Real Sociedad’s goal.
“Coach wanted to change and play with three defenders and Mendy and Lucas on the wings. At first, we gave them too much space when we turned the ball over and that’s how they scored. Our wingers were forward and couldn’t get back in time. In some games we lose points and in some others we win them, they’re a good team who fight for the top spots in the table,” he added.
Real Madrid’s visit to Atletico de Madrid is going to be a crucial game. If Los Blancos can’t win, their race for the 2020-2021 title would become much tougher.
“Next Sunday we will visit the Wanda and we have a lot at stake. We can win and we have to do everything to do it. We are well from a physical perspective and we have some players back. Atleti have been leading because they’re winning and now we have to try to beat them,” concluded the keeper.
