Handed multiple blows with majority of the team unavailable due to injury or COVID-19, Zinedine Zidane was forced to play an unfamiliar squad against Getafe. In the end, a lacklustre performance from Real Madird results in dropped points.
See player ratings below.
Thibaut Courtois — 8: Man of the match tonight after saving six shots from Getafe, many of which could have easily found the back of the net. A clean sheet but not enough from his teammates up top.
Alvaro Odriozola — 6.75: Speed helped Madrid push forward but none of Odriozola’s efforts in the box ever found anyone. At times, too, he didn’t look strong enough up against Getafe players and made questionable decisions. Finished with one aerial won and one key pass.
Eder Militão — 8: Alongside Courtois had the best performance tonight. Once again stepped up to the task of leading the backline and did so with ease. Very vocal, not afraid to get physical and popped up when Madrid were in trouble. Finished with one dribble, four aerials won and two tackles.
Victor Chust — 7.5: Handed the start and many thought he’d struggle, but Chust did very well alongside Militão. Encouraging to see as Zidane’s squad gets thinner and thinner. Finished with three aerials won and one tackle.
Marcelo — 7: Captained the side tonight but couldn’t will them forward. Marcelo showed bits of flair tonight but was missing an edge. Was picked off the ball which almost led to a goal for Getafe and had multiple misplaced passes. Still, finished with decent stats: one shot, one dribble, two aerials won, two key passes and one tackle.
Isco — 7.5: Worked in the midfield alongside Luka Modric and had a few good ideas but none of them could come to fruition. A decent performance but nothing too influential. Finished with two shots, two dribbles, two aerials won, two key passes and two tackles.
Luka Modric — 7.25: Like Isco, Modric suffered in the midfield and often couldn’t find a way to move the ball forward (a bit uncharacteristic). Had to drop into defence to help the backline multiple times which limited his influence. Finished with one shot, two dribbles, one aerial won and one tackle.
Rodrygo — 6: Extremely quiet throughout the match. Not entirely sure where his position was supposed to be on the pitch (if that gives you an insight into his performance). Looked frustrated to be substituted. Finished with two shots, one aerial won and two tackles. Off after 65 minutes.
Marco Asensio — 6: On paper, Asensio was supposed to be playing through the middle in behind Diaz but he was very rarely there. Given the amount of time he’s had on the pitch lately he surely needed to be more involved. Very lacklustre. Finished with one dribble, two key passes and one tackle. Subbed off after 78 minutes.
Vini Jr. — 6: Another eager performance but Vini Junior often had zero help up top or couldn’t get past Nyom in defence, leaving all his efforts as failed attempts. Only forward to play all 90 minutes, though, so he did the best with what he had. Finished with one shot.
Mariano Diaz — 6.5: Talk about being unlucky. Diaz was alert in the opening minutes of the match and had Madrid in front but his goal was ruled offside (very, very close). Had other attempts but couldn’t get on the end of them. Too stagnant at the top though to give teammates any assistance. Finished with three shots and six aerials won. Subbed off after 65 mins.
Substitutes:
Karim Benzema — 6: Substituted on for Mariano and while his movement helped open up gaps for Madrid, he couldn’t become the super sub of the night. Nothing really to touch on. Finished with one aerial won.
Antonio Blanco — 6: Came on for Rodrygo and moved into the midfield. Actually had a decent cameo and helped Madrid have a focal point in the defensive midfield. Assisted in both pushing team forward and winning back possession in defence. Finished with three tackles.
Sergio Arribas — 6: Came on for Asensio but couldn’t get into the match too much. Finished with one aerial won.
