UEFA have appointed Dutch referee as the man in charge of the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Semifinals between Real Madrid and Chelsea. This will be the second time he referees a Real Madrid game, with the first one being the return leg against Atalanta, ending 3-1.

Danny Makkelie will take charge of Real Madrid’s Champions League semi-final first leg encounter with Chelsea at the Alfredo Di Stéfano (Tuesday, 9:00pm CEST). The Dutch official is set to referee Zidane’s side for the second time in the competition. The first came earlier this season in the last-sixteen second leg clash with Atalanta at home (3-1).

It’s a bit surprising to see that UEFA appointed Makkelie for this game, given that more experienced referees were available. Still, Makkelie did a good job earlier this season and should definitely be a competent referee for such an important match like this one.
