After completing a memorable brace against Liverpool in the 1st leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at Estadio Alfredo di Stefano last Tuesday, Real Madrid’s Brazilian winger, Vinicius Jr, has won the UEFA Champions League Player of the Week award.
Vinicius was competing alongside other nominees: Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne, PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, and Chelsea’s Jorginho — all of whom had great first legs in their respective ties. Mbappe in particular, who scored two goals against Bayern Munich, was tough competition to leap over.
But Vinicius took the prize with his performance. In addition to his two goals, the Brazilian had 47 touches, four shots, one key pass, and one completed dribble. He was taken off after 84 minutes for Rodrygo Goes, and will almost certainly have an important role to play in Real Madrid’s two big upcoming games: A Clasico vs Barcelona in Madrid, and the 2nd leg against Liverpool at Anfield.
