Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has decided to leave the club at the end of the season, according to a report from Onda Cero which was then confirmed by MARCA, AS and other outlets like Goal.com. Zidane has already told the players that he will be leaving and Raul, Allegri and Joachim Low are the main candidates to replace him, with the current Castilla coach being the favorite, per that same report.

Zidane’s Real Madrid team is still fighting for the 2020-2021 La Liga title and this report could be a bit of a distraction, given that there are two games left in Madrid’s schedule. Los Blancos need to win them both and then wait for Atletico de Madrid to drop points in order to win the title.

If the report is accurate, Zidane’s decision is firm and will not change no matter what happens in these last two games. So far, the French coach has won 11 titles for the club, three short of Miguel Muñoz, who is the most successful coach in Real Madrid history.

It won’t be easy to replace Zidane and Real Madrid seem now set to make some kind of rebuild, with veterans such as Marcelo, Ramos or Isco ready to take a step back if not leave the club this summer. Real Madrid’s decisions about players on loan like Martin Odegaard, Brahim Diaz or even Sergio Reguilon —who can rejoin the club if Madrid trigger the buyback option— will be interesting to watch and the future coach will surely have some say in those decisions.
