In one of the most dramatic ends to a LaLiga season, it came down to the wire as Real Madrid hosted Villarreal at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium. Yet despite a comeback victory, Atlético’s win against Valladolid sees Diego Simeone’s side win the title.
For the final time this season, here are the player ratings:
Thibaut Courtois — 7: Will be frustrated not to end the season with a clean sheet but. Made one save and finished with 100 per cent pass completion.
Alvaro Odriozola —7.75: It seemed every play in the first half was being sent through Odriozola. Offered himself up down the right-wing and put in a handful of crosses for the team. Finished with 94 per cent pass completion, one key pass and one dribble. Subbed after 68 minutes.
Eder Militão — 7: Poor clearance and didn’t mark his man for Villarreal’s goal. However, still had a good performance in the backline. Finished with one shot, 92 per cent pass completion and two tackles.
Raphael Varane — 7.5: Another standard performance from the Frenchman. Partnered well with Militão and kept tabs on Villarreal players when he could. Finished with 90 per cent pass completion rate, three aerials won and two tackles.
Miguel Guitérrez — 7: Like Odriozola had a strong first half and looked keen to be a part of the action. Definitely going to be in the mix next season. Finished with two tackles. Subbed after 68 minutes.
Casemiro — 7: Another classic Casemiro performance. Worked with Modric and helped hold up any threats from Villarreal. Finished with one shot (should have been directed better), one dribble, one aerial won and three tackles. Subbed after 68 minutes.
Fede Valverde — 7: Solid 90 minutes individually but couldn’t add much to the match. Will be looking to keep up the good work heading into next season. Finished with one shot, five dribbles, one aerial duel won, one key pass and one tackle.
Luka Modric — 8.5: Ran the midfield all match without Toni Kroos and gave it his all. Another great performance from the 35-year-old. Finished with the winning goal, three shots, one dribble, three key passes and one aerial won. Modric magic once again.
Marco Asensio — 5.5: Earned the start tonight but unfortunately couldn’t make the most of his time on the pitch. Offered very little up in the attack (it was usually Valverde or Odriozola). Finished with two shots, one dribble, one aerial won and one tackle. Subbed after 55 minutes.
Karim Benzema — 8.5: What a way to end the season for Benzema with another goal and an assist. Acted as the club’s saviour all season and continued to do so all the way until the end. Finished with five shots, one dribble, two key passes and two tackles.
Vini Jr. — 6: Like Asensio didn’t offer up much but had the better opportunities in the second half right before being subbed off so he gets slightly higher. Finished with one shot, one key pass and one aerial won. Subbed after 55 minutes.
Substitutes:
Isco — 6.5: Came on for Asensio and added a bit of spark to the team. Had a good opportunity to score but couldn’t capitalize. Will have to wait and see if he stays with the club.
Rodrygo — 6.75: Came on without about half an hour left to play and made an impact. Great runs (like the one to pressure Rulli) and assisted Benzema’s goal. Will hope to see more from him in the future but he bounced back from the injury well. Finished with one dribble and two key passes.
Nacho — 6: Also came on at the 68 to help Madrid search for the victory. Decent cameo. Finished with one tackle.
Marcelo — 5.5: Played the last 20 minutes and added some energy into the match a bit. Nice to see him earn some minutes.
Mariano Diaz — 4: Came one at the 68-minute mark but couldn’t add much to the match. One decent run but couldn’t connect with the ball. Only six touches and a very low 33 per cent pass completion rate.
