Real Madrid defender and captain Sergio Ramos has been left out of Spain’s list to play in the upcoming 2021 UEFA Euro, coach Luis Enrique announced this morning. Not a single Real Madrid player features in the list, with notable absences from Nacho or Marco Asensio, who had chances to make the team.

Ramos just recovered from the injury he picked up during the return leg against Chelsea but should have enough time to improve his conditioning and form ahead of the Euro, so this seems to be purely a technical decision, as the coach confirmed in press conference shortly after the list was announced.

“I told Ramos last night on the phone. He’s barely played or trained with the squad since January. I care about the benefit of our squad and I told him to be selfish so that he could be back to his good form and keep playing for his club and country,” he said.

Luis Enrique made some controversial decisions on his list, as Iago Aspas was left out behind Pablo Sarabia or Adama Traore while Nacho also probably deserved to be included ahead of Manchester City’s Eric Garcia.
