Level on aggregate heading into the match, Real Madrid were still in the tie at Stamford Bridge but a lethargic performance against a hungry, focused and determined Chelsea side sees them eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in the semi-finals.

See full player ratings below.

Thibaut Courtois — 6.5: Not much he could have done about the scoreline but really kept Madrid in the game until Mount’s goal. Made three good saves to keep the squad in the tie. Will be frustrated with the performance of his defenders.

Nacho — 4: Defended the right-hand side of the pitch but was often exploited by the work of Kanté and Havertz. Also out of position sometimes which lefts Ramos on his own. Finished with two tackles.

Sergio Ramos — 4: Evident he wasn’t quite ready tonight but what else can you expect after being out for so long? Had a disappointing performance individually and was st fault for the first goal. Will have to wait and see if he can will the team towards La Liga title. Finished with 92% pass completion, three aerials won and one tackle.

Eder Militão — 5: The best defender of the night. Saw most of the ball down the right-wing in the first half and tried to work himself out of Chelsea’s pressure. A decent performance but doesn’t look comfortable playing out wide which often left Madrid scrambling. Didn’t mark Mount on the second goal. Finished with one dribble, one aerial and two tackles.

Ferland Mendy — 4: Also makes his return back to action but like Ramos wasn’t fully fit. Very limited in terms of helping Madrid move forward and was quiet all night. Finished with 97 per cent pass completion. Substituted after 63 minutes.

Casemiro — 5: Not his usual performance and couldn’t work with Kroos or Modric to try and stop Chelsea’s attacking flow. Positioned himself well but was ripped apart by N’Golo Kanté. Finished with one shot and five aerial duels won. Substituted after 76 minutes.

Toni Kroos — 6: Tried to move Madrid forward but was not able to break any lines or link up with Modric as he usually does. Forced to drop back alongside Ramos and Nacho multiple times which left the midfield empty. Finished with one shot, one aerial won, one key pass and a 91 per cent pass completion rate.

Vinicius Junior — 4: Offered very little throughout the time he was on the pitch and couldn’t work with Benzema. Didn’t have any attacking presence and couldn’t threaten Chelsea’s backline with his speed like he usually does. Seemingly invisible. Finished with three tackles and three dribbles, though. Substituted after 63 minutes.

Luka Modric — 6.5: Was the most active midfielder out of the three but also couldn’t get in on the action. Looked lost when Kroos was forced to drop back because there was no other support. Finished with one shot, three dribbles, two key passes and 92 per cent pass completion rate.

Eden Hazard — 4: Earned a surprise start over Asensio or Rodrygo yet had very little to offer against his former club. Zidane’s gamble didn’t work out. Still doesn’t look to have clicked in with the team’s style yet. Finished with one shot and two dribbles. Subbed off after 88 minutes.

Karim Benzema — 6: Was the most active forward of the night with two shots that tested Chelsea goalkeeper Édouard Mendy but seemingly inactive after that. Had zero support up top which limited his influence on the game. Finished with two shots, one dribble and two tackles.

Substitutes:

Fede Valverde — 5.5: Came on for Ferland Mendy after 63 minutes and did fairly well in defence. A great block to stop Chelsea from scoring their second goal quicker than they did but couldn’t use his speed to influence the game.

Marco Asensio — 5: Came on for Vini Junio rafter 63 minutes but couldn’t get in on the action whatsoever. Finished with one shot.

Rodrygo — N/A: Not enough time to make an impact.

Mariano Diaz — N/A: Only on for the final minutes.
