Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois addressed the media following the 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the return leg of the Champions League Semifinals. Courtois tried to explain why the team struggled so much and praised Chelsea saying they were the better team.
“During the first half we had the ball but couldn’t create enough chances. We had a good opportunity on Karim’s shot but their keeper did a great save and then they scored their first goal. During the second half we tried to score but they defended well and hurt us with their counterattacks,” said Courtois.
The Belgian goalkeeper was asked about what was missing from Madrid in order to advance to the Final.
“The Champions League is not an easy competition. Sometimes you just face a better team like today and can’t do much. Next year we will fight to reach the Final but there are great teams playing and you can’t always get to the Final. It was our dream but Chelsea played better than us,” admitted Courtois.
Real Madrid will now focus on Sunday’s crucial match against Sevilla, one which could very well decide the 2020-2021 Liga title.
“This was a tough pill to swallow but we have to keep going because this is football and sometimes you lose. Now we have to get some rest for Sunday’s match against Sevilla,” concluded the keeper.
