Real Madrid legend and captain Sergio Ramos is officially leaving the club, so Los Blancos will have a new team captain for the 2021-2022 season. The club’s seniority policy means that Marcelo and Karim Benzema will be the two captains, with Varane and Nacho as the third and fourth leaders.
Assuming Marcelo keeps being a reserve for most of the season, Benzema will wear the captain’s armband more often than not this upcoming season. The French attacker has been a great and vocal leader in recent years, but it won’t be easy to replace Sergio Ramos’ influence on and off the pitch.
It’s clear that wearing the armband isn’t all that matters when it comes to leading Real Madrid on the pitch. Players like Casemiro, Modric or Carvajal can be relied upon in the dressing room and also on the field, so all of them will have to step up and make sure that the team only misses Ramos’ defensive skills and not his leadership and influence.
