The Open Thread/Daily Merengue is a place where you can discuss anything and everything related to football. Feel free to discuss the topics presented here, or start your very own discussions! The Open thread will be posted every day by one of the mods you would totally go swimming after a friendly defeat with: Valyrian Steel, Felipejack, YoSnail, Ezek Ix or yours truly.

So that’s the first defeat of the season

Real Madrid faced a better prepared Rangers team, whom they lost to in the first true (read “streamable”) friendly of the preseason. Though there were some bright spots, Los Blancos - albeit missing most of their actual first team players - looked nothing like a ready team, but this game was a fun watch for fans and a good warmup for the boys in white. To put the game in some context, this was Gerrard’s boys’ last preseason game. You guys catch yesterday’s match? What did you think?

Still, what a move from Rodrygo

Martin Odegaard’s run and his choice during that counter was great, but the spotlight is Rodrygo’s in the sequence. The young brazilian tricked the defence, by first cutting to his weaker foot and expertly put the ball past the Rangers’ portiero for a clever outside of the boot finish.

  • Varane move imminent?

  • Chelsea contacted Real Madrid regarding a possible Eden Hazard return, according to Marca. This is surprising to hear, given that the Belgian, despite his abundance of talent, can’t seem to steer clear of injuries. So, my guess is Real Madrid replied with something like:

“Ho... You’re approaching me? Instead of running away, you’re coming right at me?”

(Let me know if you get the - now legendary - reference)

Someone’s taking the Ramos replacement seriously, but in the wrong way

I thought I’d share a little joke with ya.

Have a nice day and may the Madridismo be with you all.
