Real Madrid have announced that defender Nacho Fernandez has signed a contract extension with the club until the summer of 2023.

Nacho comes from Real Madrid’s academy and has been a Real Madrid player ever since he made his debut with the first team in 2010. The defender completed a sensational 2020-2021 season when he stepped up in the absence of both Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, proving that he deserves every bit of this extension.

Nacho will keep being a valuable asset for the team this season, even more so if Raphael Varane ends up leaving the club as expected. If that’s the case, Nacho could even compete for a spot in the starting lineup with David Alaba and Eder Militao, although he would likely be the team’s first backup behind those two defenders.

He is 31 years old and will be 33 when his new deal expires, so this might not be his last contract with Madrid.
