Real Madrid have decided not to sign any replacements for Raphael Varane if the French defender leaves the club this summer, according to a report from Spanish newspaper ABC. Madrid were considering the option of signing Sevilla’s Jules Kounde or Villarreal’s Pau Torres but ultimately chose to forget about those two players and complete the season with Militao, Alaba, Nacho and one of Vallejo, Chust or Gila if Varane leaves the club.
Varane has apparently decided to reject Madrid’s offers to extend his contract and that puts the club in a tough spot. The French defender would leave as a free agent a year from now and Real Madrid would rather sell him now if he is not willing to sign that extension.
Still, Varane is the team’s most capable defender right now, so his departure would be problematic if Madrid don’t sign a replacement. Militao and Nacho proved their worth last season and Alaba has been a capable center-back for the last few years, but are they reliable enough to lead Madrid’s defensive line during the whole season?
