Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has told his teammates in the French club that he is going to stay there this summer, according to a report from Cadena SER. Even PSG’s sporting director Leonardo had told the news to the dressing room, per that same information. Cadena SER’s report adds that Mbappe still wants to join Real Madrid when he becomes a free agent next summer.

Much has been said and reported about Mbappe for the last few weeks. While it seems clear that the striker isn’t going to sign a contract extension with PSG and also that he would like to join Real Madrid as soon as possible, PSG simply refuse to sell the player. Mbappe is not going to force his way out of his hometown club, which means that as long as PSG want to keep him around for this ongoing season, Madrid and the player will have to wait a year.

Many things can happen over the course of a season, though, so while Madrid fans could be optimistic about the prospect of signing Mbappe as a free agent, other scenarios should also be considered. Could Mbappe be convinced of signing an extension if PSG’s new team proves to be as competitive as expected? Could other big clubs offer Mbappe a better deal than Madrid’s? If Los Blancos struggle this season, will Mbappe want to sign for them? Could he suffer a significant injury for PSG this season?

As you can see, while it’s clear that Real Madrid currently have the edge to land Mbappe a year from now, there’s no such thing as certainty or even predictability in transfer football. If Madrid truly want Mbappe now, they should probably do their very best to convince PSG of selling the player, even if it means offering more than the reported €150 million.
