Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is very satisfied with what he’s seen from academy left-back Miguel Gutierrez this pre-season and will give him minutes in the upcoming campaign, according to a report from Diario AS.
Gutierrez made his debut for Madrid this past season and proved to be ready to play relevant minutes when given the chance, so this is no surprise even if Madrid already have Ferland Mendy and Marcelo for that spot.
All things considered, it looks like Gutierrez could be ahead of Marcelo for the backup left-back spot when everyone is healthy.
Right now, Mendy hasn’t trained with the squad and he is set to miss the first few games of the season given that he will need to improve his form and conditioning when he is healthy and ready to play, so Gutierrez might actually get a few chances to play early in the season.
It should also be noted that some Spanish reports suggest that Ancelotti will use Mendy as a center-back in case of need, so there will likely be some portions of the season where Marcelo and Miguel Gutierrez are the team’s two left-backs.
