Real Madrid have announced that they will host a tribute to late president Lorenzo Sanz ahead of Sunday’s home match against Celta Vigo, which will be the team’s return to the Santiago Bernabeu. Sanz passed away due to Covid-19 in 2020.
There will be a tribute to our beloved president Lorenzo Sanz when football returns to the Santiago Bernabéu tomorrow. Prior to the clash with Celta, Real Madrid will remember the man who presided over our club from 1995 to 2000 but passed away on the 21st of March 2020. During Lorenzo Sanz’s time at the helm, Real Madrid won two European Cups, La Séptima and La Octava, as well as 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 LaLiga title, 1 Spanish Super Cup, 1 basketball league title and 1 Copa Saporta.
Remembering all those who have passed
The Santiago Bernabéu will also take a moment to remember all those who have passed away in these tough times we are experiencing, in particular the season-ticket holders and madridistas who have left us during the pandemic.
This will be Real Madrid’s first game in front of their home fans since the Covid-19 pandemic started. Los Blancos had played their home matches at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano in Valdebebas but they are now returning to the Bernabeu, even though the rebuild works are not over yet.
Sanz was a pivotal president in Real Madrid history, as the club reconquered the Champions League during his tenure, winning La Septima and La Octava after a 32-year drought.
