The road to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup began today. Spain started their campaign against the Faroe Islands and comfortably won the game 10-0, dominating proceedings from the opening whistle. There were 7 different goal-scorers, with Amaiur notching 4 in her 2nd senior appearance.
Misa, Marta Corredera (played on her preferred right flank), Ivana, and Athenea all started the game. Spain were already knocking on the door in the opening min as Corredera delivered a lofted ball into the box. Athenea began the game on the right but was seen shuffling between both flanks in the opening half.
Spain piled on the danger as Athenea maneuvered her way out of a tight space and hit the crossbar with a shot. This was a common theme all throughout the game and the floodgates opened in the 7th min as another great cross from Corredera was met by Amaiur for Spain’s opener.

Corredera found acres of space to attack in front of her and constantly bombed forwards or played lofted balls in from the right half-space.
Amaiur got her 2nd of the game in the 32nd min from another cross by Ona, who enjoyed herself throughout, ending her night with 2 assists. Spain ended the first half up 3-0.

Second half saw a change from Spain as Corredera came off for Lucía García and Spain switched to a back three, slotting Athenea in at wingback. Amaiur completed her hat-trick in the 55th min via an assist by Mariona, who had a brilliant game herself, picking up 2 assists.

Spain controlled proceedings completely as the ball almost exclusively stayed in the opposition half. Second half substitute, Lucía García, grabbed a goal as well in the 58th min.

Amaiur continued to pile on the misery with her 4th of the night after a neat little exchange with Putellas. She showcased a brilliant first touch, beat the challenge, and slotted it past the goalkeeper.

Athenea, who ran at defenses like usual, got an assist to show for her effort when she crossed the ball in for Patri, who headed it into the back of the net.

Athenea was subbed off for Nerea in the 73rd min and Spain continued to look for their 10th of the night, which came in the 95th min, as Laia Alexandri headed the ball home.

Spain finished the game with an astronomical 56 shots compared to just 1 from their opponents.
Ivana and Misa had very little to do the whole game, Misa didn’t even face a shot on target while Ivana did well carrying the ball forwards and in recovering possession.
Spain will look to build on this against Hungary on 21st of September.
