The Turkish club also signed Roberto Carlos at the end of his career

After 16 years at Real Madrid, Marcelo’s contract expires in June of 2022. The left back may be deemed surplus to requirement given the growing prominence of both Ferland Mendy and Miguel Guttierrez. Marcelo’s drop in form, re-occurring injuries, and his large salary would justify Real Madrid’s heart-breaking decision to let the Brazilian leave the club. Waiting in the wings are Turkish club, Fenerbache, who would be interested in signing the fullback on a free transfer, according to Turkish media outlet Milliyet. Marcelo’s idol, and the other legendary Brazilian left back from Real Madrid, Roberto Carlos also joined Fenerbache at the end of his career when his Madrid contract expired. It would be a fitting end for Marcelo to continue to follow in the footsteps of his idol.

Marcelo will be 34-years-old by the end of the 2021-2022 season. He may decide to continue playing in Europe with a new chapter in Turkey, or could opt to return home to Brazil. A return to Brazil would mean his two young boys — Enzo and Liam — could have the opportunity to live in their native land for the first time. Enzo is a part of Real Madrid’s youth team (Under 12s) and has been one of the stand-out performers for his side. It would be a abrupt change to leave for Brazil, but could be an opportunity to develop in Brazil and watch his father’s final few years as a professional.
