Carla Camacho scores brace for Spain against Turkey in U-19 WEURO qualifiers

Spain U-19 have begun their qualifiers for the upcoming Women’s Under-19 Championship 2024 in Lithuania. Their first step towards the tournament was Türkiye against whom they won 4-0and dominated the whole game.

Real Madrid had three U-19 internationals in the starting lineup - Noemí in defense, playing right back, Olaya in midfield, and Carla Camacho leading the attack. Paula Partido, who is loaned out from Real Madrid to Celtic, also started alongside Camacho on the right wing.

La Roja completely dominated the match. The majority of the time, the ball was played in Türkiye’s side of the pitch. The first clear chance came in 16’ when Barcelona’s Vicky sent a side cross to Camacho in the center of the box but the young striker couldn’t reach far enough and the goalkeeper caught it before she could get to it. Spain then continued trying to find Camacho in the box sending in crosses. It was mostly from the right hand-side, from both Partido and Noemí. Partido would also often times dribble past the defense and enter the box where she would mostly fail at the final pass. Her crosses were quite precise, but Türkiye managed to jump to defend these crosses before they’d find Camacho. Olaya would also help the right hand-side a lot, especially if Vicky was already in the box.

In 39’ Madrid CFF’s Marina hit the crossbar from a long-range shot, however her luck turned around 2 minutes later. After a failed shot at the entrance of the box, Marina got a hold of the ball and chipped it from around 20 meters.

In 45+2’ Olaya had a double chance as she went running in the box, shot it, where the ball hit the post and missed the rebound. In the end, she was called for being offside.

There was a double substitution in Spain at halftime. Paula Partido got off for Real Madrid’s forward Marisa, and Laia Martret replaced Adriana Ranera on pitch.

In the first five minutes, Spain gets a freekick which is taken by Olaya. The midfielder decided on a direct ground shot which ended going on target but into goalkeeper’s hands. With Marisa on pitch, Camacho was freer to roam around, going out wide at times as well.

Fourteen minutes in, there’s another goal from Spain’s side. Corner taken by Marina running into the box from the corner flag gave Spain a bit of problems, but in the end of the action, Vicky sent the ball into the box, to Marisa’s head where it bounced off straight to Carla’s foot.

A couple of minutes later, in 62’, Lucía Corrales made a brilliant run-in to pass it to Carla’s left foot with which she scored a volley of sorts.

In 64’ Olaya was subbed off for Cris Librán. In the continuation of the game, La Roja had quite a few more chances and numerous corner kicks, most of which were taken by Vicky. The Turkish goalkeeper, Defne Sarıoglu, had her hands full as she made 3 saves to deny the Spaniards.

Toward the end of the encounter, Türkiye found themselves attacking. They even had a late attempt on target by Sara Temel. However, in the same minute, in 90+5’, Spain cemented it with another goal. This time by Laia Martret who had come on for the second half. Athletic’s Jone Amezaga sent in a cross to Marisa on the near post whose header attempt hit the post, and in the effort to clear it, Tuana Yılmaz passed it to Martret to push it into the net and make it 4-0.

Spain have Portugal and Sweden also in their group for the Women’s U-19 Championship qualifiers. Their next match is this Saturday at 18:00 CEST against Sweden, and they play Portugal next Tuesday at 18:00 CEST.
