Transfer Rumours

Real Madrid do not have a sporting director and have not had since the sacking of Jorge Valdano when Mourinho first came to the club. The Argentina legend had made some unsavoury comments about Mourinho’s football and it was unlikely that they could work together. Since then Juni Calafat, the Chief Scout has had an increasingly influential role in recruitment and could easily be said to be in charge of building the squad.

The Story So Far:

Eder Militao

During 2018/19 the hottest CB prospect in the world was one Mattias de Ligt. The Ajax graduate was attracting attention from all corners and it seemed the obvious move for Real Madrid to try and sign him. Juni Calafat opted for Militao. The Brazil defender was raw but had the attributes needed to play CB for Real Madrid. His pace, power and height being crucial for a team that often leaves the CBs exposed.

Militao has since won every club trophy available to Real Madrid and this vindicated Juni’s faith. His recent ACL injury has put the team’s season in peril but he still has a long career ahead of him at Real Madrid.

Fede Valverde

Arriving at the tender at of 17, Fede Valverde came in highly rated and destined for the first team. This seemed to be in doubt when the youngster was sent on loan and returned to find minutes limited in the 2018/19 season. It would take the trust of a certain Zinedine Zidane to give the youngster a chance to shine and he has not looked back since

Liverpool v Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League

Fede has won everything at the club and is only at the beginning of his prime years. Juni Calafat unearthed a gem that would cost untold sums if one had to buy him in today’s market. The sky is the limit for Fede.

Rodrygo Goes

A high profile youngster who was wanted everywhere and had the choice to go to the biggest clubs in the world. Juni worked his magic again to help Real Madrid land the youngster. Rodrygo would announce himself with a debut goal and followed that up with a hatrick in the champions league.

Real Madrid v Manchester City Semi Final Leg Two - UEFA Champions League

He has since won everything with the club and at the young age of 22 still has some time before reaching his prime.

Vinicius Junior

A prodigious talent with an insatiable appetite for the the spectacular. His combination with Karim Benzema saw us treated so some of the most beautiful moments in the game. Vinicius hit the ground running at Real Madrid. Proving himself a big game player, still only 18 and in a new environment.

Real Madrid v Manchester United - International Champions Cup

After winning everything with the club, the youngster has the potential to be one of the all-time greats. Time will tell but his talent is undeniable.

Real Madrid have had great success without a sporting director for well over a decade now. Juni Calafat has shown an eye for talent and has so far done a fantastic job in rebuilding the squad. Given that Florentino is getting on in years, would the club be better of with Juni Calafat as the sporting director?
