Matchday Edition of the Daily Merengue

SSC Napoli v Real Madrid CF: Group C - UEFA Champions League 2023/24

The Daily Merengue is a place where you can feel free to discuss all things football. Do not be alarmed by the overt RMCF bias. It’s in the name!

Shoutout to the mods who do a fantastic job, Valyrian Steel, Felipejack, Juninho, NeRObutBlanco and yours truly, Kung_Fu_Zizou

SC Braga v Real Madrid CF: Group C - UEFA Champions League 2023/24
  • Real Madrid have the best defensive record in the league with 9 goals conceded in 13 games
  • Cadiz have the worse offensive record in the league with 10 goals from 12 games while conceding 17 goals in the process
  • Real Madrid have scored 28 goals, a record bettered only by Girona and Atletico.

Real Madrid can surely expect Cadiz to park the bus and play for a point but this is a game Los Blancos should win even with all the recent troubles.

The predicted Lineups

Given how much Ancelotti enjoys Kroos playing as a pivot, one can expect Kroos to start in the DM role with Rodrygo replacing Vinicius in attack on the left side. Fede and Jude will continue in their familiar roles while Modric will likely be paired with Kroos at the base of midfield. Joselu start in order to guarantee a box threat.

Ancelotti has used variations of the 4-4-2 this season and it is his most trusted approach so far. We might see a 4-3-3 during the game but with Vinicius missing, getting the best out of Jude will be the priority.

Some Guys have all the luck

Vini received a personalised gift from the great Cristiano Ronaldo. While the shirt was from a match against Lichtenstein, the significance will not be lost on Vinicius. Ronaldo scored his 128th international goal in that shirt.

Raul on the move?

A small tribute to Xabi

Happy 42nd Birthday to the legendary Regista

Real Madrid v Atletico de Madrid

The man from the Basque country is loved among Madridistas in some ways like Zidane in that he didn’t grow up in the club but he’s been adopted as one of its favourite sons. Hopefully we’ll see him in the Real Madrid dugout next season.

Leverkusen: Righting the ship

Leverkusen were 2nd from bottom in the Bundesliga when Xabi took over in October of 2022. He proceeded to bring stability and calm reaching the Europa league semifinals while also finishing 5th in the league. This season, Leverkusen are the form team in Europe. Unbeaten in all competitions with their only blemish, a draw against Die Roten in Munich.

Leverkusen are scoring at 3.6 goals per game which is quite extraordinary and a testament to how well Xabi has them playing. Conceding 0.8 goals per game also means they are defensively sound for a team that is playing some heavy offense.

Peerless passing
