Napoli attacker Giovanni Simeone gave a lengthy interview in Marca today ahead of his side’s clash against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu tomorrow. The striker, whose father is Diego Simeone, has an obvious emotional connection to Madrid, and is looking forward to playing against his ‘rival team’.
What should Real Madrid expect against Napoli?
“A team with a lot of desire, with a lot of energy. We have just beaten Atalanta.... We are beginning to create a path to fight for the top positions. We are very eager to have a great game in Madrid.”
How ‘special’ it is for a Simeone to play at the Bernabeu
“Yes, it is special for me, because of Napoli, because of the standings — but it is also important because of my individual, because I lived my entire life with Atlético de Madrid on my chest; I always had the Atlético shirt everywhere. I am a big fan of the club, beyond my dad. I always said it and it will always be that way. Wanting to score a goal or wanting to win at the Bernabéu is something to tell your children. It’s difficult and that’s why I would like to do it.
“Scoring at the Bernabéu would be a goal for my career, for my life and to be able to prove to myself and the team that we are strong and one of the best teams in Europe.”
Favourite Real Madrid players
“I always liked Benzema, but he is no longer there, but it is inevitable that I name him because he is one of the best forwards I have seen in my life. And, although he is not my exact position, because of how young he is, because of the desire he has, always asking for the ball... I love Bellingham. He is always looking for positions, giving his teammates options. He is a boy who has great potential, beyond what we see. I like him a lot and he catches my attention how many times he asks for the ball.”
Who are the favourites to win the Champions League?
“The usuals. In addition to Madrid, who is always there, City is a team that is exciting, that we like to watch because they play very good football.”
