Ahead of Real Madrid vs Napoli in the Champions League, Dani Carvajal spoke at the player press conference held on Tuesday. The vice-captain previewed Wednesday night’s game and discussed his own form, stating: “I feel like I’m contributing a lot to the team and I feel good in terms of confidence. I’m at 100 percent and focused on this game against Napoli, a top team, and on facing a top player like Kvaratskhelia. We want to ensure we top our group.”

Carvajal on Real Madrid’s injuries

Discussing the club’s lengthy injury report, he said: “It’s not good for us to have so many players missing. That said, these absences open up opportunities for players who don’t usually get so many minutes. They always know they have to be prepared for moments like this.”

Carvajal on Lunin’s performances

One of the players who has come into the team during the injury crisis is Andriy Lunin. On the Ukrainian, Carvajal said: “He’s so professional. He may be quite shy, but I want to congratulate him because he has always answered the call and helped us a lot. Every time he has played, he has done very well. It’s up to the coach to decide who plays.”

Carvajal on the busy calendar

The player was also asked for his take on the big debate of recent weeks, which has been about the calendar. The Spaniard stated: “Many of us, the players, don’t agree with the fact that there are so many matches, and so many that don’t mean much. If you push the players too much, the level of quality goes down. And, it’s no coincidence that there are so many injuries. The calendar is demanding for those of us who play in top clubs and for their countries. The new Club World Cup format will leave us with practically no summer holiday. It’s complicated, but the players have the power to do something. One argument against is that the players would have to lower the salary, but we never said we wouldn’t lower it.”

Carvajal on a renewal for Ancelotti

Asked if he’d be in favour of Carlo Ancelotti being given a new contract, the right-back said: “As far as I’m concerned, let him stay as long as he and the club want the relationship to continue. There are few coaches who can do as well as he has done at Real Madrid.”
