After wrapping up the Champions League group stages with a win over Union Berlin, Carlo Ancelotti praised his reserve players such as match winners Joselu and Dani Ceballos. Asked about their contribution, he said: “This type of match is to vindicate themselves. They played a complete game and showed the quality they have. Joselu is a great finisher and we have to take advantage of his quality as we did in the second half, but not in the first half. In the second half he scored a goal.”

Ancelotti on any negatives about the group stage

“There is not one. We have done very well, playing with continuity compared to the beginning of the season. In the last two matches, the problem is that we took the lead and didn’t manage it well. Today’s 1-1 draw or when we took advantage against Betis. We always have to get back into position and finish.”

Ancelotti on Luka Modrić’s penalty miss

“Looking for a reason is complicated. Luka has had two where he has not scored. The truth is that we are trying with Bellingham, with Rodrygo, with Vinicius, Joselu. Hopefully it can change.”

Ancelotti on Fede Valverde’s fitness

“Kroos for Valverde was prepared and I didn’t want to give too many minutes to one or the other.”

Ancelotti on Fran García

“He did very well defensively and offensively. He provided the assist for the second goal. He changed positions with Rodrygo to put in more crosses and balls.”

Ancelotti on Jude Bellingham

“He’s doing very well. He’s very well, in optimal condition. There is no risk and he helped us win the match.

Ancelotti on his half-time team talk

“I told them 40 minutes very well played and two minutes of madness. It is an oversight that we had to fix without haste. We had to maintain and enjoy the game a little more on the wings because we didn’t take advantage of it in the first half.”
