Carlo Ancelotti talked to the media after seeing Real Madrid cruise to a very convincing 4-1 win over Villarreal, with goals from Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo Goes, Brahim Díaz and Luka Modrić. The main talking point of the game, however, was not related to the win at all, as we saw David Alaba suffer a rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament in the 35th minute, being immediately subbed off for Nacho Fernandez.

The Italian coach addressed the bizarreness of this entire season by saying: “This is the first time it has happened to me; three of my players tearing their ACLs.”

Ancelotti on replacements

Whether Real Madrid sign a centre-back in January or not, someone will have to replace Alaba on the pitch. When talking about intra-squad replacements, the Italian mentioned Aurelien Tchouameni.

He said: “Tchouaméni, in an emergency, is the 1st option after the centre-backs. Now, it’s an emergency. He can play there.”

Ancelotti on January signings

It is very clear that Real Madrid need reinforcements in the centre-back department. When asked about whether Real will sign a centre-back in the upcoming winter transfer window, Ancelotti said: “We will see in the coming days if something can be done.”

Ancelotti on Real Madrid’s goalkeepers

Lunin has been performing at a very high level for Real Madrid this season, sparking conversation about him potentially overtaking Kepa Arrizabalaga in the pecking order. Ancelotti said: “Lunin is one of the two starting goalkeepers we have. The other is called Kepa Arrizabalaga.”

Ancelotti on Carvajal’s recovery

Dani Carvajal has been out for a few weeks with a calf injury. When asked about his recovery, the coach said: “Carvajal will return to training. He could play in the next game, but we will not take any risks.”

Ancelotti on other absentees

Real Madrid have had a really bad season when it comes to injuries. However, there was some good news when Ancelotti was asked about the return dates of a few notable absentees.

Addressing that point, he said: “Vinícius, Camavinga and Arda Güler will all be back after the holidays.”
