Real Madrid’s versatile defender, David Alaba, has won his 10th Austrian Player of the Year award, making him, by a wide margin, the most decorated player in the country’s history. The award was announced today by the Austrian News Agency.

Alaba, who joined Real Madrid from Bayern Munich in 2021, helped Real Madrid win Copa del Rey last season.

Alaba, now sidelined with a long-term ACL injury, is still widely regarded as a great center-back, as well as a versatile player who can play as a centre-back or occasional left-back — a position he has had to fill in for Carlo Ancelotti as recently as this season. Though he has made a few costly mistakes this season, he has been important with his ball progression and leadership, as well as some heroic last-ditch tackling.

Alaba’s 10 awards as Austria’s best player is quite remarkable. He has won the award in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020, 2021, 2022, and now 2023. He is Austria’s greatest player of all time.
