Endrick turns around Palmeiras’ season — leads them to the title

Palmeiras clinched their 12th Brazilian Serie A title on Wednesday night, after a 1 - 1 draw against Cruzeiro. The star of the show was 17-year-old striker Endrick Felipe, who scored the game’s opening goal to cap an incredible run to the end season:

Endrick’s goal was his sixth in the last seven games. His run to the end season was pretty historic. He became the first player since Neymar in 2009 to score at least 10 goals in a league season in Brazil while being under the age of 18.

Furthermore, Palmeiras were in a bit of a rut earlier this season (behind by as many as 12 points in the table at one point), and head coach Abel Ferreira hadn’t entrusted Endrick with many minutes. A big turning point was when when Botafogo were up 3 - 0 against Palmeiras and Endrick’s team were nine points out of the title race. Endrick scored two goals, Palmeiras won 4 - 3, and Endrick and his team never looked back.

“My friends told me that I could be the star of the championship and win individual awards, but for me, being a protagonist does not exist,” Endrick told TV Globo after the game. “If the team had only me I would never be able to win. That’s all the team and I have to thank them for being here.”

Endrick was the star both on and off the field last night:

Endrick will now take a deserved break, and will be in attendance at the Bernabeu in Real Madrid’s next home game vs Villarreal.
