Rodrygo sets new personal dribbling record against Real Betis

Real Madrid missed the chance to go three points clear at the top of La Liga after being held to a 1-1 draw by Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin on Saturday. The visitors took the lead in the 53rd minute through Jude Bellingham, who controlled, with his chest, a perfect pass from Brahim Diaz before finishing expertly:

But Betis equalized in the 66th minute through Aitor Ruibal, who, unmarked, slung an unbelievable shot from distance, past the outreached and helpless arms of Andriy Lunin:

While Real Madrid had good spells, particularly in the first half, they conceded many great chances in the second half. The transition defense was porous throughout, and after Ruibal’s goal, Real Betis were much the better team, and Lunin came up big towards the end. Isco also nearly scored twice.

One of Real Madrid’s best performers, along with Jude Bellingham and Antonio Rudiger, was Rodrygo Goes — who gave Aitor Ruibal hell on the defensive end with his incisive dribbling and link-up play with Bellingham. The Brazilian winger was a constant threat on the left flank, using his pace, skill, and trickery to beat his markers and create openings for his teammates. He also did brilliant work on Brahim Diaz’s disallowed goal in the first half.

Rodrygo completed 10 dribbles tonight — the most he has ever completed in one single game in a Real Madrid shirt.

Despite Rodrygo’s impressive display, Real Madrid will be disappointed with the result, as they failed to build to their lead at the top of the table before Atletico Madrid, Girona, and Barcelona all play tomorrow.

“I leave here satisfied, it’s a good point for the table,” Carlo Ancelotti said after the game. “Do you want me not to be satisfied? Do you want me to be very sad or angry? It’s not like that, I’m happy.”
