Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press after his side overcame Atlético Madrid to win the Spanish Super Cup semi-final 5-3 in extra-time, coming from behind after an early goal from Mario Hermoso and going on to win despite twice allowing Atleti to take the lead. Asked about such a comeback, Ancelotti said, “it’s nothing new, it’s pure Real Madrid DNA. Let it be a good learning experience for the youngsters: this team never gives up. You can lose, but never give up.”

Ancelotti on his substitutions

“It gives me a lot of confidence, because those who came on won us the game. Joselu, Brahim, Ceballos... it gives a coach a lot of confidence that the whole squad is motivated. That’s the only way to win this type of match.”

Ancelotti on recovery time before the final

“There are four days left, but the wear and tear has been terrible. It was very hard. The match was back and forth, very competitive, with two teams fighting a lot. We won because we were more energetic at the end.”

Ancelotti on worries about conceding three goals

“Yes, and we have to improve it. Hermoso scored an unmarked goal, for example. The second goal was a great goal by Griezmann, after a spectacular play, that can happen.”

Ancelotti on Pellegrini’s call for penalties, rather than extra-time

“Yes, I think he’s right.”

Ancelotti on Dani Carvajal

“He is a fantastic player, with a tremendous personality, a spectacular character. He has been involved in two goals... demonstrating a presence that, like Mendy, is key for us. He brings a lot to the attack.”

Ancelotti on Kepa’s performance

“It was good, in my opinion. In the first two goals he couldn’t do anything and in the third, he was a bit bothered by Morata’s jump. For the final... we’ll see. Kepa, or Lunin.”

Ancelotti on his lack of celebrations

“I think you have to be calm, because the match had a lot of emotions... but there are still 90 minutes left to win the title, our goal.”

Ancelotti on Toni Kroos and the booing

“I don’t understand the booing and I don’t think Kroos does either. I really don’t understand them. Regarding the decision, Toni has arrived with a discomfort and I preferred to put in a fresher player. The truth is that these are very complicated decisions, very complicated.”

Ancelotti on extra-time

“Because we are two very strong teams. Atleti today played very well, they made us suffer with our high pressing, because they had great players and they came out. They handle the leather well and that makes them dangerous. They are organized... they have everything. These matches are always very difficult.

Ancelotti on Mendy scoring

“The only thing I could say is that I was surprised that he was there. When he scored, I looked at him and thought.... Was it Mendy?”
