Real Madrid 1-0 RCD Mallorca (Rüdiger). A win late on. Here is the immediate reaction. Tune into: Player ratings, post game pressers and a post game podcast.
After months of anticipation, Arda Güler was finally in the squad. Alongside him on the bench sat Brahim Díaz, Joselu Mato and Nico Paz from Castilla. Andriy Lunin started between the sticks, with Aurélien Tchouaméni filling in at centre-back due to the extensive injury list. The old guard started in midfield, joined by Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde. The Brazilian star boys were left to riot in attack. Castilla graduate Omar Mascarell was on the bench for the visitors. Luka Modrić captained Real Madrid.
The first half was difficult to write out to say the least. Vinícius Júnior had the games first decent chance when he latched onto Luka Modrić’s pass only to miss the target from a good position. Fran García then saw his shot blocked away by his own teammate. Mallorca had a go through Antonio Sánchez but his header skimmed over the bar. A half of poor finishing and little action, 0-0 the fair result going into the locker rooms.
ANTONIO RUDIGER PUTTING REAL MADRID UP 1 - 0 AGAINST MALLORCApic.twitter.com/wjiaGTSmHB— Managing Madrid (@managingmadrid) January 3, 2024
The second half seemed destined to be just as dull, but it was the visitors who had the first chance to score. A long ranged shot came in, beat Andriy Lunin but crashed against the post. Joselu Mato came on and had a good chance to score, hitting the post himself from a headed effort. Most fans would be predicting 0-0 at this point, but Antonio Rüdiger had other ideas. The last centre-back standing leaped the highest from a Luka Modrić corner to accurately head the ball past the goalkeeper. Sadly, it was not the type of game to introduce Arda Güler back from injury, but Madrid did manage to easily see the game out for a 1-0 win. Any thoughts?
