Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press after the victory over Arandina got Real Madrid off to a winning start in the Copa del Rey. One of the major talking points was an impressive debut from Arda Güler, and Ancelotti said: “he played for an hour at a good level. Obviously he is not at the physical level. He showed his quality. He showed it in the first half. I said we have to be patient with him. He has personality, he has character. That’s good. He stands out for the quality he has with his feet, but character is also important to do well at Real Madrid.”

Ancelotti on Brahim Díaz

“For me he missed a lot of passes, but he was decisive. He forced the penalty, scored the second goal and provided the assist for the third. In the first half we missed a lot of passes in general, but in the second half we were much better.”

Ancelotti on Camavinga’s fitness

“Camavinga had a knock in the first half, on his back, but he is fine. He’s available for the next matches.”

Ancelotti on Tchouameni’s best position

“For me Tchouameni is a pivot and in the emergency he is a central defender. In the next game Nacho returns and he will be a pivot. Mendy returns tomorrow and my job is to choose the best for each game.”

Ancelotti on being favourites for the Super Cup

“I don’t know about favourites. It’s a short competition. We are close to winning it, but it is also short for the rest. We are confident. The physio’s room is empty apart from Lucas Vázquez and that’s a good sign”.

Ancelotti on Barcelona

“I think Barça are doing well. They are in the fight for LALIGA, the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Cup. I don’t like to evaluate others, but they will fight for all the titles.”

Ancelotti on the challenge in this game

“It wasn’t difficult, it’s our job. It has been a night for this town to enjoy Madrid. They welcomed us very well. The club was spectacular. Epiphany was celebrated in a different way and we are happy.”

Ancelotti on Thibaut Courtois’ fitness

“Courtois trained this morning, very lightly. His recovery is going well, like Militao’s. We must not be in a hurry. There is no need to be in a hurry.”

Ancelotti on rotating goalkeepers

“The goalkeeper of the Supercopa is not the starter. They are both doing well. We’ll take it one game at a time.”

Ancelotti on Castilla players

“The youth players have done well. Tobias, Carrillo, Mario Martín did very well too. And Nico Paz, as usual.”

Ancelotti on Arandina

“They tried to play as they could. In the first half they had more chances and in the second half they lowered their physical level a bit. They played a game like I would have played if I were on the other side.”
