Watch out Cristiano! This is what the field looks like in Bosnia, where Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal side will wager their place in the 2012 Eurocup in the first of a two-leg playoff. Just look at the field. Look at it. And pray (or whatever you want) that Cristiano, Pepe, and Coentrão don't break anything.
It's September 11, 2011, ten years after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington DC. I was wearing a Real Madrid jersey in my 7th grade biology class in Madison, Wisconsin; I remember not understanding why classes were getting cancelled until my teacher turned on the TV. I also remember going home and watching Real Madrid play Roma that night; I couldn't believe that the game was happening. I still remember the images from all around the world as people, athletes, politicians, and rock stars from every country shared in our country's pain. This one sticks out in my memory though: my team, Real Madrid, gathered around the center circle before their Champions League tie against Roma. (In retrospect, I still can't believe that this game went on. What was UEFA thinking? Just another reason to hate them, I guess). So as you watch the other Liga games today, or you turn on the NFL, MLB, or go to the movies, stop and remember, even if it's only for a minute, what happened 10 years ago today. Thanks, and Hala Madrid.
A photo from Real Madrid's official photo shoot. Check out the whole thing at the official website! Cool to see the boys hanging out, just having the time of their lives. Enjoy yourselves, and HALA MADRID!
Andrés Iniest and Chilean defender Vidal getting into it to start the huge brawl that ended the Spain-Chile match. Why does it always seem like players are kissing when they're actually fighting? Or is that only me? For more on Spain's 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Chile, check out my recap over at SBNation.com/soccer. Warning: recap may not be suitable for people who think Spain can do no wrong...
Dear Internet, Thank you for making that guy who was standing right behind Mourinho as he poked Tito Vilanova in the eye a meme. You really brighten up my day. (Oh, and in case you were wondering, "el del bigote" is not Mr. Satan from Dragon Ball Z). Sincerely, Gabe
