Luka Modric played 90 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Sweden on Saturday and is expected to captain his side again tonight vs Portugal in the UEFA Nations League. In build up to the match, Modric spoke with the Croatian press about his conversation with Cristiano Ronaldo before training and how he feels physically.

“I did see Ronaldo, we talked for a little and I am glad we saw each other after such a long time,” Modric commented. “We have fond memories and it’s always great to see him. We recalled things from Real Madrid and a bit about the current situation. Everything in general. One conversation between two former teammates and two good friends,” he explained.

When asked about his physical level, Modric expressed no concerns. “I am ready physically, 100%. I always feel good when I play multiple games in a row, rather than when I skip a game. I know it will not last long, I am not at the beginning of my career and I want to enjoy every training session and every match,” he concluded.

Modric’s statements about his physical level and desire to play consecutive matches could be seen as a message to Zidane. Having been used in a rotational role, Modric starts some matches and in others is brought on in the final 20 minutes. The 35-year-old still feels strong enough to start consecutive matches and does not want to be sat on the bench.

Alvaro Benito, former Real Madrid player and youth coach, analyzed Modric’s words and conveyed his thoughts on El Laguero: “What I like about Modric is that he still rebels. You shouldn’t see that as a bad gesture. It hurts him not to be a starter, and he goes out to vindicate himself. I love it!”.
