Disgraceful night at the Bernabeu.

GK - Keylor Navas:

4.5/10

Although I thought he could've done better on the second goal, Navas made some saves which prevented this Madrid performance from getting even more embarrassing. Considering he had such a weak and disorganized defense in front of him, Keylor really did as much as he could.

RB - Danilo

3/10

The Brazilian defender was one of the worst players on the field. He was not able to keep Neymar back and was always caught out of position. He was also seen switching positions in order to try and help the centre-backs which then allowed Neymar to attack so much through the left wing. On the occasions when he joined the attack he lost the ball and gave away easy passes to the opposition. After this performance I don' think there should really be a doubt regarding Carvajal being a starter.

CB - Raphael Varane

3.5/10

The frenchman was unable to keep up with Suarez and Neymar. One of the worst performances I have ever seen from Varane who is usually a very convincing player against Barcelona.

CB - Sergio Ramos

3/10

The captain was also part of a dreadful defensive line and was very much at fault for the first goal which left Marcelo having to cover him after Ramos had gone out of position and left his area unattended. Ramos was also unable to organize his defense to play the offside trap correctly and this cost the team two goals (although one could argue Neymar's goal was offside). Considering he is dealing with a chronic shoulder injury, I think this is the manager's fault for starting a player that is not 100% fit in a match where everyone needs to be in top shape.

LB - Marcelo

4/10

Marcelo was probably the only defender who showed the most spirit and grit to help his team throughout the first half. The brazilian defender was very promising when attacking through the wings and had a very good shot on goal at the beginning of the second half that could've perhaps changed things for Real if he had scored; however, his contribution was cut short when he was substituted after picking up an injury.

CM - Toni Kroos

3/10

Kroos had a howler, the German hasn't been in form this whole season and this performance showed just that. He was absolutely shocking defensively and his passes seemed rushed and unsure at times. Judging by his decision making, he seemed to always pick the easy passes and was lacking confidence.

CM - Luka Modric

4/10

Although Luka tried his best to get some sort of order in midfield and tried to connect the back four to the attacking trio he, along with Kroos, failed miserably. The pressure put on by Barcelona in midfield was too much for him to deal with. Modric was often seen dwelling on the ball in midfield, looking to find a pass but would ultimately just make a dead end pass. Even though Modric showed a bit more grit defensively it was obviously not enough since Busquets and Iniesta had a free for all in midfield.

CAM - James Rodriguez

4/10

The Colombian showed some promising signs on his first start for Madrid in almost two months. James played some intricate passes in the opposition's half and had various attempts on goal but still wasn't able to find a way to connect with the attacking three. He was subbed off at the beginning of the second half after picking up a yellow card.

LW - Cristiano Ronaldo

3.5/10

The portuguese star was just nonexistent throughout the first half and really struggled to find the spaces in attack. Considering that the few attempts on goal he did have were saved by a remarkable Bravo, his presence on the field was very undermined by the performance of the whole team.

RW - Gareth Bale

2.5/10

Bale is one of the players who worries me the most about in team. The welshman looks absolutely disarranged. Throughout the first half he was seen blindly running into three defenders without raising his head up to look for team mates. He took a lot of absurd shots from outside the box and just looks completely out of place in attack. Defensively he offered absolutely nothing and never tracked back to help his full-back defensively.

ST - Karim Benzema

2.5/10

The frenchman was atrocious, but who can blame him? This was obviously not the game for him to come back into the team, much less as a starter. This was a terrible mistake by the manager who should've taken into consideration that the player's personal problems off the field have affected his mentality and physical form on the turf.

SUBS: (Isco for James, Carvajal for Marcelo)

Isco -

3/10

Showed some signs of classy attacking play and will to help his team mates on defense but this was all overshadowed by a ridiculous foul on Neymar which earned him a red card.

Carvajal -

4/10

In the 32 minutes he was on the field he showed passion, grit and will to help his team. His speed and athleticism really showed when defending against Neymar in that left wing but still earned himself a yellow card after a foul on the brazilian.

Absolutely shocking performance by this Real Madrid side.

Rafa Benitez tried to defend his starting line-up but a 'gala' eleven with the absence of a ball-winner such as Casemiro played into Barcelona's hands.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez. Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Luka Modric. Rafa Benitez had his full squad at his disposal for just the second time this season ahead of the biggest game of the campaign yet there was one crucial cog missing from his star-studded starting eleven in the Clásico.

The reasons for a 4-0 humiliation on home soil against bitter rivals were numerous for Benitez and Madrid. The finger was pointed at talisman Ronaldo going missing, a calamitous defence and pressure from president Florentino Perez for Benitez to play his ‘gala' eleven in the biggest club match in world football. The latter weighed as heavy as any of the reasons given post-match.

To suggest that Casemiro would have been a big miss in the big matches just a few months ago would have been met with humour and derision. A player who hadn't really had a crack at the first team and had been sent out on-loan to Porto to ply his trade while the big-name players got on with things at the Bernabeu. Now, his absence from the Clásico had as big an impact on the result as almost anything else.

Barcelona were good and clinical but they were not superb. They didn't need to be. Madrid saved their worst performance for their biggest match and although reported internal problems between players and coach looked seemingly obvious to anyone watching, it was no surprise that the performance came with the Brazilian on the bench.

The gaps between the lines were numerous and they were spacious. Barcelona is a team that likes to play in tight spaces but on Saturday night at the Santiago Bernabeu they didn't have to. The absence of a defensive midfielder to protect the back four and close the gaps aided Barcelona from the first whistle until the last.

The finger will be pointed at Benitez but it will also be pointed at his president. Madrid's line-up was its strongest on paper but not its most pragmatic - especially for a game such as this. Despite having Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and James Rodriguez in the middle of the park Madrid were simply overrun in midfield and that impacted on the defence and the attack.

Los Blancos' starting eleven to face Luis Enrique's side looked like an eleven picked by Perez, and not the man he chose to succeed Carlo Ancelotti as coach. Casemiro is not only a player in-form and the perfect player to try and nullify the Barca pressure around the Madid box but he is also a Benitez-type player. Instead, Toni Kroos was left chasing shadows and having littlee influence on Madrid's attacking play.

"The team I name is based on trying to manage the players I have at my disposal," Benitez said in the post-match press conference in response to a question about club politics. "The players have enough quality to play better. At the end of the day we're all responsible and we have to work together to find a solution and make the fans happy."

Madrid needed a player to protect the back four and break-up Barca's attacking play. They needed a player to do the dirty work and the answer was on the bench. Casemiro is not a player well known for changing a game and his inclusion in the starting eleven this weekend may not have changed the eventual outcome given the deficiencies across the board, but it would have given Madrid a better chance. It would have almost certainly avoided such a humiliation.

Without him, the Catalans were able to attack at will and the scoreline could, and probably should, have been worse. That the 0-4 scoreline perhaps flattered Madrid on their home turf said it all.

The problem stems back to Claude Makelele and his relationship with Perez. The Frenchman was eventually moved on from the Spanish capital after failing to win over the man who pays his wages. Makelele wasn't a ‘Galactico' but, just like Casemiro, he was a crucial cog in a star-studded team. His important was overlooked and so was that of the Brazilian this weekend.

In Madrid's other big matches this season the 23-year-old has featured. Casemiro started the games against Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (home and away) and although Los Blancos only won one of the three, they didn't lose and looked solid defensively. Benitez has built his team on a solid defence and that basic foundation was missing against one of the most dangerous attacking teams on the planet, even with Lionel Messi on the bench.

"We wanted to apply pressure, attack, win possession high up and we paid for not doing so," Benitez said regarding the absence of Casemiro. "Things didn't turn out as we hoped. Our idea was to push high up and have possession," While it's true that Kroos had succeeded in doing that in previous matches, this was a match where Benitez's defensive instincts, for as much criticism as they get, needed to kick-in.

It remains to be seen whether Benitez will stick with the same starting in the coming weeks if all of his squad are fit and available but Madrid are more likely to get away with such a line-up in the Ukraine this week or against Eibar next weekend, with due respect. The true test will be when the big matches come think and fast after Christmas across all competitions - if the coach is still in the job.

Rafa Benitez’s side was thoroughly outclassed by Barcelona in an embarrassing 4-0 loss. At the heart of this debacle was his tactical decisions.

Attacking set-up

On paper Madrid started in a 4-2-3-1, with Ronaldo left, Bale as a shadow striker, James right, and Benzema up front. Kroos and Modric were the two holding midfielders behind this front four. But in watching the game, it was nearly impossible to tell what shape Madrid were playing in. Los Blancos were so fluid that they became utterly disorganized. It seemed there was a lack of an attacking game plan, or at least that the plan went out the window the second Barcelona went 1-0 up. There were several times in the first half where two of Ronaldo, Benzema, and Bale were near the box in the ball and it took 3 seconds for support to arrive.

As Madrid fell further behind in the scoreline, I actually think the frontline did well to create the chances they did. However, not only was Bravo in inspired form, it must be noted that Barca’s defense had probably switched off after going 3-0 in front.

Overall, there was a real lack of connection between the midfield and front line. Players were not at all sure where to be and Benitez gave too much freedom to his front line to do as they please. This sort of fluidity is something that Madrid want to achieve in the future, (and is something that Barca benefit from greatly) but when you just get Benzema back from injury and Bale has only played one game since prior to this match (recently that is), it is probably better to go with a more structured approach. Benitez really got his offensive tactics wrong here.

Defensive tactics

But while the attacking may have got better across the course of the match, the defending unbelievably got worse as the match progressed. Part of that is down to the individual blunders of Varane (went color blind as he consistently passed the ball to a red and blue player) and Ramos (who couldn’t keep track of Suarez at all). It didn’t help that Danilo was also being skinned alive on Madrid’s right flank by an in-form Neymar. Marcelo was the best of the lot as he limited the chances from his flank, made an inspired goal line clearance, and pushed forward with real purpose.

But aside from this, there was something fundamentally wrong with the way we defended, and at the moment I am not quite sure what it is. For one, I know that Benitez seemed to have instructed his players to play a normal defensive game. It looked like he told his players to let Barcelona come onto the edge of Real’s half, and then contest for the ball whenever it entered the zones of Modric and Kroos. But Madrid (who have been pressing for most of the season) seemed torn between sitting back and pushing up as the scoreline went against them. This led to disjointed efforts in pressing (often with either Kroos or Modric running forward leaving the other confusedly behind), which simply allowed Barcelona to pick passes with ease. In addition to this, Ramos and Varane kept charging nonsensically up the pitch to put pressure on players receiving the ball. At first I thought they were just bad decisions by the players, but the frequency with which it happened makes me think that this was a Benitez decision.

Benitez’s substitutions

But frankly, the most bizarre moments of the night were the substitutions. James was clearly Madrid’s best player (he moved deep to receive the ball, distributed play the best he could, and took good shots on goal), but he was taken off for Isco. While I have nothing against the little Spaniard, that substitution was frankly absurd, especially when you consider that James was not lacking in match fitness whatsoever.

Soon after this, Benitez bettered himself by removing Marcelo, a natural left-back and Madrid’s second best player on the night, for a right-back in Carvajal! Danilo (who was wholly ineffective on the night) was shifted to the left-wing as Carvajal took up his normal position on the right. Am I the only one seeing how utterly incredulous these changes are?!!

Conclusion

Overall Benitez completely misjudged Barcelona. His tactics were way off and he just made all the wrong decisions. However, his players didn’t set the world alight at all (particularly the defenders) and credit must be given to Barcelona for being so supremely good. While the press will rage for ages about this one, the Madrid camp must put this defeat firmly behind them and focus on the midweek champions league match vs. Shakhtar Donetsk.

A woeful performance by Los Blancos turns into jeers for the whole team and President Florentino Pérez while Barcelona earn a statement win in El Clásico.

After such an abysmal performance by Rafa Benítez's men it's hard not to wonder how can this Real Madrid team play this bad. Not one player seemed to care a single bit as Barcelona completely dominated the whole match effortlessly by keeping the possession and hurting Madrid with dangerous counterattacks as soon as Los Blancos tried to attack without tracking back. That same pattern was repeated over and over again until the final whistle. One of the worst performances by Real Madrid in a very long, long time.

Barcelona's opening goal was well deserved and scored in the 11th minute of the game. By then, Real Madrid had already shown worrying signs with the ball, being unable to keep it for longer than 20 seconds while it's true that Barcelona also seemed toothless prior to that goal. It would be reasonable to say that Real Madrid rolled over after that but it would be way too generous with their first 11 minutes.

Barcelona scored their second goal and virtually put the nail in Madrid's coffin in the 39th minute, something that infuriated the fans at the Bernabéu. The players left the pitch after the half-time whistle listening loud jeers while some fans also blamed President Florentino Pérez by singing "Florentino dimisión -- Florentino out --". Real seemed to start the second half way better but their charge ended very soon and Barcelona had time to score two more. Luis Suárez and Iniesta were just too much to handle for a careless side like Real Madrid.

The blame should be shared. Benítez decided to start a very attacking-minded lineup and there was no midfield to contain Barcelona's possession game. This made no sense as neither James, Bale, Benzema or Ronaldo helped Modric and Kroos. That's arguably Benítez's fault and something that needs to be addressed if these 11 players are going to start again. That thing said, the players simply did not care enough and their effort has to be questioned. Kroos, Danilo, Marcelo, Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo did not try their best and that's something Real cannot afford in El Clásico.

The fans have the right to blame Florentino Pérez's decisions last summer. The team did not end the season well under Carlo Ancelotti but if firing the Italian was the right choice, hiring Benítez certainly wasn't. He wasn't a coveted coach in European football and only West Ham United were interested in his talents. That says something. Assembling this roster and putting it in Benítez's hands was a mistake to say the least.

All in all, turbulent times ahead for Real Madrid. How will Pérez react to the fans' complaints? How much credit left does Benítez have? It all remains to be seen, but it sure looks like this personnel will not end the season together.

The Spanish manager spoke after the 0-4 thrashing against Barcelona.

Rafa Benítez remained in calm after the 0-4 Real Madrid suffered against Barcelona, saying that they "have to stay together and regain some confidence after this loss that hurts us so badly." The Spanish manager also added that "the second half was much better and we could've made a comeback had Marcelo's shot gone in."

Benítez did not want to speak much about his situation in the club right now. It seems that he could be on the hot seat but he refused to talk about this topic. "Our plan was to attack and that's why I started this team. It obviously did not work out and that's all I can say about the lineup. We turned the ball over and we made important mistakes. It's not all a matter of playing with the right attitude because we tried hard when the second half started."

The fans at the Bernabéu were very unhappy with the team and the players were whistled when the first half ended.

The worst clasico performance since the manita

They say that calling for a managers head after one loss is a knee-jerk reaction. Two consecutive losses? Probably more of the same. But when you factor in that Real Madrid tonight were obliterated to the point that they looked like an amateur football team in a way that Rafa's predecessor - Carlo Ancelotti - never did, a call for a sacking is rightfully gaining momentum.

Tonight Rafa wrote an incredible book: How to lose against Barcelona - a definitive guide of making sure you get dominated in every aspect of the game by your arch rivals.

Real Madrid let Barcelona play with comfort. There is a common trait with all of Real Madrid's clasico wins in the past half-a-decade, it's that they pressure high up the pitch and suffocate Barcelona's back-line when they have the ball, which often leads to winning the ball back and throwing Barcelona off their game. Apart from a few brief patches of doing this tonight - where, lo-and-behold, it worked - Real Madrid didn't bother to put pressure on Barca who were in troll-mode for 90 minutes passing the ball with acres of space against a disinterested, disengaged, and lethargic Madrid.

Ronaldo not tracking. I was on Twitter often tonight, and it occurred to me that no one really mentioned anything about Ronaldo's defense. When Barcelona had the ball, Ronaldo was walking. The best (worst) example of this: He could have easily cut off a passing lane en-route to Iniesta's goal, but didn't bother.

This could be an entire chapter in Rafa's book written today: the transition from defence to attack was non-existent. Modric, James, and Kroos were in areas of the pitch the weren't conducive to the flow. Self-explanatory picture and the reason why the defensive line had no outlets to pass to:

Midfield, where are you? #HalaMadrid pic.twitter.com/fuZAeFCidR

Danilo was a walking corpse. He should have been taken off at half-time for Carvajal. I've been a big defender of Danilo, but tonight, he was not a footballer. He couldn't pass, dribble, defend - he was a disaster.

Say what you want about Carlo Ancelotti, but he never had a game like this where he was thoroughly embarrassed. With a few differences in the team, he completely suffocated Barcelona in last year's Clasico at the Bernabeu with the same midfield trio of Modric - Kroos - James. Tonight, it wasn't so much Rafa's line-up choice that was his undoing, but his tactics. There are very few times I would consider sacking a coach this early into a season, but if tonight's pillaging wasn't ample proof that Real Madrid will not win anything with Benitez, then I'm not sure what else you need in order to be convinced. Cut the ties now.

The lineups are official.

It's all set. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona released their official lineups for this first Clásico of the Liga BBVA season.

Real Madrid Starting XI: Navas, Danilo, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Kroos, Modric, James, Bale, Ronaldo, Benzema.

FC Barcelona Starting XI: Bravo; Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba; Busquets, Iniesta, S. Roberto, Rakitic; Suárez, Neymar

This is a very important match for Real Madrid. If Barcelona get a win, Messi and Co. will have a six-point lead in the Liga BBVA table, but a win for Madrid would make things very interesting.

For the first time this season, Benítez has every player at his disposal, and he's decided to start both James and Benzema.

Luis Enrique keeps Messi on the bench so expect him to come on during the second half trying to shake things up. Rakitic has made the Starting XI after spending some time recovering from an injury as well.

Where will you watch El Clásico?

This first Clásico of the Liga BBVA season has the potential to be a thrilling match between two of Europe's best teams. It would be reasonable to say that Real Madrid have not been quite as impressive as the potential of their players suggests, but maybe Benítez needed his men to recover from their injuries in order to have some depth and different options to choose from.

Considering that Los Blancos are 3 points behind Barcelona in the Liga BBVA table, it will be extremely important not to lose the match. A draw would be acceptable in terms of long-term odds at the title, but a defeat could have a serious impact in the team's confidence.

It will be extremely interesting to see what Benítez does with his lineup. Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, James, Isco, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are all available, but there is no room for all of them and Benítez has been reluctant to do without Casemiro ever since the Brazilian started the Madrid Derby.
